Tegan Talks: SPF

Let's Talk SPF

Hello, Lovely Humans!

Let’s talk SPF—the most debated, yet arguably most important, step in any skincare routine. I get it: opinions are flying around faster than summer road trip playlists, and many natural-minded folks are cautious about what goes on their skin. So, let’s break it down gently, with science, love, and some myth-busting along the way.

Why SPF Matters: Aging, Pigmentation & More

The sun may feel warm and wonderful, but it’s one of the biggest culprits when it comes to skin aging. Exposure to UV rays accelerates the breakdown of collagen, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. It also triggers melanin production, causing pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Key Statistic: The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that up to 90% of visible aging is caused by UV exposure. Yes—90%!

Sunscreen isn’t just about aesthetics either; it’s also your best defense against skin cancer, which remains one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S.

Types of SPF: Chemical vs. Mineral

Not all sunscreens are created equal, and that’s a good thing—it means there’s something out there for everyone.

Chemical Sunscreens:

  • Work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the skin.

  • Typically lighter in texture and easier to blend into the skin without leaving a white cast.

  • Common ingredients include avobenzone, octisalate, and oxybenzone.

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens:

  • Sit on top of the skin and physically block UV rays by reflecting them away.

  • Contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Finding Balance: My Professional Take

In my experience, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use every day. Yes, even in winter. Yes, even if you "aren't going outside" (UV rays go through windows, you know). And no—the SPF in your makeup is not enough. Studies suggest you’d need to apply about seven times the normal amount of foundation to get the advertised SPF protection—so unless you're planning to channel your inner cake-face, it’s just not realistic.

Think of SPF as part of your skincare regimen, not just an occasional product. Whether you prefer a chemical or mineral formula, the key is consistency. If natural and clean products are a priority for you, there are fantastic mineral options on the market that provide effective protection without compromising on ingredients.
